What Mickey is talking about is the Defocus Control Nikkor AF 135mm f/2D DC. It's a unique lens design because it lets you deliberately emphasize the amount of foreground and background blur. As Mickey correctly stated the only other lens with this capability is the Nikkor AF 105mm f/2 D DC.

But this is a standard internal adjustment in many lenses. I have used both the 105 and the 135 - very nice lenses.

That isn't what you'd call an "internal adjustment". There normally is no way to adjust it, other than perhaps adding shims to move the second element.

It's normally a design characteristic, and the lens is then built to that specification, and each and every lens built has that element in exactly the same position.

I have all three of nikon's "portrait " lens, the 85f1.4, 105f2, and the 135f2. I use the 85 for Children/youths and the 135 for adults. With the extra distance provided by the 135 I found the perspective ideal and it is clearly my favorite "go-to lens". While
nothing can match the 85''s wide open backgrounds , I find most people choosing the shots made with the 135. Finally, while the 105 is also a wonderful lens (and if I owned only one it would be the compromised choice), I should probably sell it as I NEVER choose it over the other two.

I use the 105 mm f2.0 for all my portraits (I do landscape, animals and macro mainly). I don't like taking portraits but have started doing more just to learn the techniques. I have played with the other two lenses but like the 105. My bias may be that the 105 is superior macro lens

The DC lenses are anachronistic to film. With digital a tweak here or there and you have the image you want. The DC pictures never looked natural to me especially on a D1x. Have not used it since. BH photo displays the effect of the lens and to my eye it just doesn't look natural. The subjects look paste into the pictures. I'm sure someone experienced with the lens could negate this effect

The thing I use it most for is photographing basketball--for portraits it is a bit long, but useable--I use the 105 a lot more, and the 85 (no defocus) most of all. I don't think you would use f2 much on portraits--one eye would be sharp and the other out of focus--but at about f3.5 and the defocus set to match (camera set to "A" you will get some really nice backgrounds--whenever I hear or read the word "bokeh" I want to vomit---pure affectation

Thanks for the nice review ! - and I agree with your findings. Another nice aspect of the 135 f2 is the use of TC's - up to 270mm f4 ! A more important aspect for portraits is probably variable soft focus over defocus control. DC has it's place more in artistic type work .
