stopping lens creep

I have a zoom lens, but it seems that when i have the lens pointing straight down or straight up, the lens creeps along the direction gravity is pulling it. the lens lock switch is only useful when the zoom is all the way shortened.

What can i do to prevent the creep but not resort to taping it (since I would be adding/removing tape for each shot).

thanks

I would think those free give away advertizing bracelets (like the one for the charity LiveStrong) they pass out at functions everywhere would also do the trick.

This was on another thread afew minutes ago

Yes, it works, but its really just a wrist band.
By 1 Cor 1:18 on May 28, 2012

I bought this band for my 28-135mm Canon lens, I works fairly well and the black blends in well with the lens.
The thing is, all they really are are rubber Wrist Bands that say "Lens Band" on them. When I got it I was disappointed that I had in effect paid 12 bucks(including shipping) for it when I had some laying around the house that I got for free. I actually have a couple that work better.
Nothing against the company, but If you are thinking about buying this lens band, try a rubber wrist band first...

It was suggested here on UHH to use a rubber band on the lens. Since I was having that problem with this lens I thought I would try it. Works just fine.

lens with a number 64 rubber band

Yes, agree... a large rubber band is what they are. I have one big zoom that creeps right now, well, point it down and it does not creep - it runs full speed!

Not sure that the bright colors are worth the extra bucks either....

A silicone band works well and lasts longer than a "rubber" band.

Where do you find a silicon band?

I have two lenses that experience lens creep. I have used the silicone wrist bands on each for several years now with excellent results. Adjust it so that it just rubs on the rotating parts, with just enough drag to allow it to turn easily, and yet, stop the creep.

I have a nikon 18-200 lens that has that problem. I fixed it with something called a Hair Scrunchy. It's those little rubber bands that women use to put their hair up. Go to Walmart, or Target. You can buy a package of them for around 3 bucks I thinks. It solved the problem.

I thought I read on a thread here about this and someone was using the bands you get when you buy veggies like asparagus and such.

That can be a nuisance. My 28-300mm has a lock that I sometimes use, but then I have to remember to unlock it. I don't like the idea of the band because that, too, must require some attention to zoom. I generally walk around with a hand on the lens to keep it in place. It's extra security, too.

Jerry the hair scruchie thing I talked about doesn't require anymore attention with it than without it,except it keeps your lens from creeping down on you.

Here is what I use. If I remember correctly my cost was $.79 for 1/4 lb package.

I have the Canon version of that lens. The rubber band that comes with supermarket asparagus works well and is free. However every time I see a $600 lens fixed by a rubber band it pi$$es me off.
