I totally agree, and also make sure the camera you get has a viewfinder. When I was looking for a new camera (DSLR) I was interested in the Sony because it is much lighter than the Canons and Nikons but I found the controls too complicated and fiddly to access for me. I settled on a Canon.
I also have a Canon G10 and these cameras, now up to G16 I think, are fantastic. You can use auto or you can use controls easily as they are handy on the external of the camera. This camera would suit you very well.

The problems using an LCD normally occur in bright sunlight, so there is no way to tell if the LCD will be adequate until you have wandered around outside for awhile using it.
