Just purchased Canon 70D. Cannot download raw files to my PC (Windows 7 & PSE10) or daughter's MAC. Get this message: "The file is damaged or is in a format that cannot be included in Elements Organizer." Tried to download various Adobe updates, but no success.

Ichy,

The Canon RAW file format has the .CR2 extension, if you see that extension in the folder you transferred your image into you do not have a problem downloading camera RAW images, you may have a CODEC missing problem in Windows 7. The CODEC will enable you to see the RAW file images as a thumbnail.

Search for CODECS RAW at Microsoft.com for Win 7, download and install the file, then reboot and see if you can find your transferred image files.

Adobe... ??? Someone else may have to jump on this one.

PSE10 has ACR 7.4 and you need ACR 8.2 so it is time to update Elements.

I don't know your upload method, but try using a card reader if you are not already just to get the file into a folder. If your codecs will allow, you should see a thumbnail image (which will not open in Elements 10). If your codecs will not allow then you should see a windows icon with the filename underneath.

Codec pack for Windows can be had from:

Ichy,
The Canon EOS Digital Solution Disk which came with your camera contains Digital Photo Professional which is the Canon tool for processing .cr2 (raw) files. It includes versions for both Windows and Mac.

I have a Canon 70D and ran into the same problem. Searcher is right. The raw file formats are new. You need an updated Windows CODEC and an update to your Adobe software. Searcher gave you the right info.

The Canon EOS Utility and DPP software that comes with the camera might not even work; mine didn't. (I guess I got an old disc.) You can always get updates for those programs at the Canon web site.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Could not respond sooner because I took computer to my "computer savoy" techs. Downloaded Searcher's reply, but did not help (but thanks alot). That's when I called computer people. They said they did all kinds of updates to no avail. I hope PSE13 will solve problem! And yes, DPP did work. Again, thanks everybody. I love this forum. One more thing-Searcher, I love England!!

Perhaps I could have been more clear: the CODEC update is for the OS and other Microsoft programs--Windows Explorer, Windows Live Photo Gallery, etc.

Updating to the new version of PSE is the only way to update PSE.

davidk--I am aware the only way to update PSE is newer version. My tech people were trying CODEC updates from Adobe. Bare with my ignorance, are there updates CODECs's for Windows/Microsoft?

If the windows codec pack did not work for you, there is a website "Fast Picture Viewer" which sell codecs and guarantee them to work. The codec pack costs $9.99 and can be had on a 15 day free trial.

This is the Codec pack that I use, I don't recommend it first time round because the Microsoft pack is free.

The Fast Picture Viewer has never let me down, and I do get involved in most raw files, both new and old. I do not own all those cameras, but I work on many differing files.

The link to the site is http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

I had a similar problem when I shot my first RAW photos on my 6D. I thought my copy of EOS Utility, and DPP would be what I needed. Wrong, I had to update both programs for my 6D. The new programs also work for my 7D also. For using Lightroom I have to convert the RAW to DNG. Should I get a new 7D II I'll have to update again, I'm sure.

Well Searcher, I tried the trail download but got same result. It's probably something I'm doing wrong. Not too good at this. Will probably just get PSE 13-hope it will work but will try to find more info to make sure it will work!!! Thanks for your help.

Yes. The easy way to tell whether the CODECs you have installed for Windows support your files is to simply open an Explorer window with your raw files in it and choose one of these icon views: Medium, Large, Extra large.

If you see thumbnails of your pictures, you're all set with Windows. If all you see is graphics of cubist (?) daisies, you need the Microsoft update.

Did you get the Canon CD which should had come with your camera.. If you have it, load it into your PC and one of the first files that pops up is Canon's "EOS Utilities" which is the file where you download images from your camera into your PC...

Also, have you updated Windows 7 by downloading it's service pack 1 which seems to be needed for many cameras when downloading photos into a PC which has Windows 7 software installed ?

My best,
~Doug~
