When taking pictures, I found some were too bright. I shoot with the flash in ETTL mode, not Manual. Is the only way you can make the flash less bright is to use Exposure Compensation? I know in Manual you can use 1/1, 1/2, 1/4 etc... powers, but was wondering if you can use that in ETTL mode somehow?

From the Canon website HERE

Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC)
Press the [Select/Set] button. When the FEC symbol
begins blinking use the [+/–] buttons to add or subtract flash exposure. You can adjust the exposure over a range of +3 to -3 stops in 0.3-stop increments. Press the [Select/ Set] button to lock-in your choice, at which point the display will stop blinking. (With most EOS bodies, this can also be set on the camera body.

This should work in ettl mode.

OMG! thanks so much! I have read all about this flash, and of course this is the part I didn't retain.

Yes in TTL, Exposure Compensation is the way to go. But you could move the flash back a bit too, or put a tissues or some diffuser over it, ND gel, etc. You can set your flash down to 1/2, 1/4 etc as well, even in TTL.

How can you set the flash down to 1/2, 1/4 etc. In ETTL? I've watched a video, and they made it look like that was just for manual mode.
