Today I went to back up my photos and my external hard drive didn't work. All of my photos are stored on my external hard drive because my computer's hard drive isn't big enough for them. I had three external hard drives (now I have two). Thankfully, I backed up my back up. In a few minutes I'll be ordering a new external hard drive to bring me back up to three drives. Learn an important lesson:

BACK UP YOUR BACK UP! Yes, I'm yelling -- it's that important!

You may actually be able to salvage that drive. often it is the hardware of the drive case and not the drive itself that fails. (cheaper components than the drive) You can take it apart and hook it up directly in a computer to see, and they sell replacement cases.

Consider a network storage device that includes two hard drives in a RAID-1 configuration - they automatically mirror each other so if/when one fails the other still has all your data.

Thanks for reminding everyone about something they should be doing anyway.

I have two external and save all important images to archival discs and are in a safety deposit box at bank.

Great idea! I keep everything on an external and the current folder I'm building backed up on a second. All the rest of my folders are backed up on DVD in my closet.

And if the house burns down you have nothing... OFF SITE.

If the house burns down I'll have lost everything anyway so what's the difference?

Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's broken.. Sometimes my drives aren't visible and I have to unplug and re-plug them back into the USB port. Sometimes I just reboot the computer. I would completely check it out first before assuming it's broken. Try plugging it into a different USB port too. I had 3 USB ports go bad. My bad because I wasn't careful and tried to plug the wrong end of the USB cord into it and saw it spark. The 3 of the 4 ports on that USB3 card quit working. I bought a new card and all my drives are fine.

With this attitude, why make a backup all?

Been thinking about archival disks. What do you think about storage on SD cards?
