Bats!

These little critters roost during the day under the cap on my metal garage roof, coming out predictably at sunset (within minutes, but getting earlier every day.) So far these are the best shots I have managed. They are tough, dark colored, fast moving, in a light starved environment. They don't climb around, but burst from cover at full speed! Anyone have any experience taking photos of Bats please share your wisdom!

You did well in such challenging light conditions Anthony, the second picture is very good,

Never had the opportunity to shoot bats; but I can appreciate the challenge. Low light, fast critters, only seconds to get the shot. Tough assignment. But I think it would be fun.

Good in-flight shots of a difficult subject! The only bat photos I've ever gotten were when they were obliging enough to hang in a nearby tree at eye level (which was a bit startling, when I unexpectedly came face to face with one, which in turn startled him, making him hiss). :-D

Getting small, fast flying birds in daytime is hard enough. Getting this bat well enough to id is truly amazing!

I did use the on camera flash, but I don't have a slave unit to post nearer to them which I think would be a big help.

I think you did amazingly well, considering the conditions. I'd love to have a bat family living near me :)
