Chernobyl Provides Income for the Tourist Trade

Touring the ruins of Pripyat and Chernobyl are not on my list of things to do, but they are popular tourist destinations. You've probably seen pictures of this deserted area, but the pictures don't necessarily represent what the area looked like when it was abandoned. Thousands of tourists have moved things to get better pictures.

A massive cemetery. On a much, much smaller scale, PA has its own Chernobyl, it's called Centrailia and represents the worst of what coal could do to our state...again, an energy source leaving an almost deserted countryside. No tourists that I know of.

Thanks for sharing this, Jerry.

I know someone who lives in the coal area. Her grandfather disappeared into a sinkhole when she was a kid. A lot of people got rich from coal, and a lot of others got sick.

I know. Have you ever driven through there? I'm not religious, but if I were, that's what I think hell would be. Some people won't move...at least last time I knew. The land has steam coming from it, the houses are the dirty color of gray, the smell is horrible, yet you see clean wash just hung on the line, maybe one or two houses... Some refuse to move or did.

I have a good friend who photographed a lot of the existing life there and the death...his photos are quite interesting. I would love to tell him about here.

I know. Have you ever driven through there? I'm no... (show quote)

I'm tempted to go and take some pictures, but I doubt that I will.

Total devastation caused by our desire to get coal at any cost to the environment... It's sad, Jerry.

It is strange that people go there. I just read a story about the Russian helicopters that were used in the rescue operation there. They just dump them in a area because they were radioactive and they still are radioactive.

I was in the Air Force with a guy from Coaldale. He told me that some of the homes have had the basements cave in and the holes were hundreds of feet deep.
