The "open border" virus

The new enterovirus, introduced by the migrant children from Central America is now causing Polio - like paralysis that is permanent. Allowing hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals to invade your nation is irresponsible, to say the least. But, then putting those people on buses and airliners, to be sent to every corner of this country without a long period of confinement, in which they could be monitored for signs of disease--is criminal.

In his haste to score political points with Latino voters, President Obama may very well have doomed thousands of our children to a lifetime of paralysis.

Excellent point, Cat!
Not only putting them on buses and airliners, but placing them in classrooms!
It would be nice if America was offered a president with brains instead of these goofy, self-centered, mindless, corporatist lackeys. Neither party has put up anyone with two licks of sense for as long as I can remember.

I wouldn't expect anything less from this administration.

I was wondering if that is where ( incoming immigrants from the Southern Border) the virus was coming from, they also brought other diseases with them such as T.B.

For President Obama not to deport them within 72 hours of arrival, (as they do if they were Mexican children), he should be sued and relieved of duty for putting U.S. citizens in harms way.
I said it once, he just cares about himself and more votes for the Democratic party, no matter what the cost, even at endangering the U.S. citizens' health and well being.

For himself, Golf is the top priority, followed by vacations and, of course, fundraising for the Democratic party.

No I think he really believes in his Progressive Socialist transformation of America - no matter what the cost in suffering of the American people. That the result will be a more egalitarian society even though it may cost decades of grief and the lives of many, the end result will be a fairer, more just America. The fact that the man is basically an arrogant, narcissistic naive with no real integrity and no understanding of either economics or government, only facilitates his mission.

EV-D68: The (Not) New Disease to (Not) Panic About

http://skeptoid.com/blog/2014/09/16/ev-d68-panic/

Some relevant excerpts:

Any time a rare or mostly unknown disease spreads quickly and infects children, the news media will jump all over it. Fueled by misinformation, politicization and old fashioned lies, the disease’s reputation starts to precede it and people start to panic. Conspiracy theories sprout, fingers are pointed and fear becomes the order of the day.

...

"Millions of Americans deal with an enterovirus every year, usually manifesting itself as a cold. Most people recover from them quickly without medical intervention, but occasionally they can become much more serious, requiring hospitalization. The most efficient way to prevent coming down with an enterovirus is good hygiene – washing your hands with hot water and soap, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze and not going to work when sick. This particular strain was discovered in California in 1962, and while rare, has cropped up in small clusters in the US before. According to the CDC, there were 79 reports of EV-D68 between 2009 and 2013. Mostly what we’re dealing with is a rarer strain of the same common cold that hits US schools every late-summer and early fall, when kids are going back into confined spaces with a lot of other kids, and maybe not always washing their hands when they go to the bathroom."

...

The farther to the fringes you go when looking for news about EV-D68, the fringier the news gets. One especially nonsensical and incredibly racist strain of nonsense blames the spread of the virus on illegal immigration, specifically the tens of thousands of unaccompanied children from Latin America attempting to cross into the US through Mexico – children who are supposedly unvaccinated and carrying all sorts of horrible diseases with them.

While a debate about what to do regarding illegal immigration isn’t germane to this post (nor appropriate for Skeptoid), this particular strain of Brown Scare can be easily debunked.

I couldn’t find any reputable source that identifies any kind of unusual outbreak or cluster of EV-D68 in any Central or South American country, though there have been outbreaks in Japan and Europe. Anyone who claims that enteroviruses are “common” in countries of origin for immigrants is cherry picking, since they’re common everywhere (again, we’re dealing with the common cold here.) Additionally, the outbreaks of EV-D68 have been mostly in states far from the border – places like Missouri, Illinois, Kansas and Colorado. There have been (as of now) no confirmed cases reported in states where most of these children are.

Right. And we all know how forthcoming our government is with information, and how they ALWAYS tell the TRUTH! They assured us that no cases of Ebola would get into the country. Even though it was Obama who threw out the previous protocols for quarantining people with diseases entering the country, we were assured that these rules were unnecessary and unfair. Yes everything will be fine, little children. Just trust us!

What does that have to do with anything? Neither I, nor the writer I quoted are weighing in on one side or the other vis a vis "the government," the administration, or the immigration controversy.

The point is that this particular scare story is nonsense.

Just because we cannot trust the politicians, that is no reason to therefore trust your sources for this story. It is illogical to suggest otherwise.

Not so. You say there is no evidence that that the new enterovirus was introduced with the recent influx of sick kids from Central America. The absence of evidence in a political system which tries to conceal anything which is unfavorable to it is not proof of anything. In fact I have seen credible reports that DO incriminate the immigrant introduction of this new virus that is causing children to become extremely ill, including dying (and now there are polio like paralysis cases). It is all the more credible now that we have a hunt going on for the 100 or so potentially Ebola exposed people in Texas, which was supposed to have been impossible as well.

Well said.

The mainstream press has aided and a abetted this man for the same reasons.

Did you ever hear about the hundreds of thousands of native Americans who died of measles as the European colonists entered this hemisphere? The Colonists rarely sickened at all. That's the thing about viruses. They can be innocently carried by populations that have developed some resistance to them but devastate a population which is susceptible. This is especially true of enteric viruses and influenza. The kids who entered our Southern border were immediately dispersed throughout the country. There are about a thousand recent young immigrants now in North Carolina, an estimated 500 or so in Charlotte alone. School just started. Just wait a few months for this to develop.
