I'm not sure of what if any connection there is between IR and a xcf extension but I did find this information.

"Gimp 2.8 on Macbook Pro

At least with Gimp 2.8 on a Macbook Pro, you can't actually "save" an image as a jpg (or anything other than a .xcf). You have to go to File->Export and "export" the image to a non-gimp format. I hope the developers can fix this."

Does that help?

I know a good amount about IR, digital and film. So ask away on that. But I have to say I never even heard of Gimp or xcf before. I pretty much stick to Photoshop CS6 on a Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit system. And work with RAW (dng), psd, tif, and jpg files. I use a MAC or Win XP or Win 7 machine at school.

Feel free to post or send me some of your IR for review. I should warn you about one weirdness with digital IR photography I would via my converted camera. Some applications to not see a "IR" file in proper RGB form since they really are not. I swap color channels in Ps CS6 in my IRs and then play with them. Sometimes to Black & White. A problem I found is if I try to edit them with any of the Topaz suite aps (the ones I've tried any way), Topaz will not recognize the IR image from Ps. You access Topaz from the Ps filter menu with on an open file. This odd problem might occur with other programs. I am not yet sure what Elements or Lightroom does with IR images. They should be OK but I have not tried opening them with those programs yet.
