I took the RV there for 3 days last Summer. The battle ground is impressive. You'll want to tour the location of all the battles, get the push button tour guide. You'll be glad you did. Every State who participated in the battle has a monument. There is also a wonderful museum on the grounds. 100s of thousand men died on the battle field, and nither army had graves registration detail, the men who died were buried in mass graves by the local towns people. Some were piled 6 or more deep. Enjoy your trip. Lots of history to see.

we were there in june. 2 days wasn't enough time. also I didn't have my own vehicle, as I was with my daughter and her husband and 2 granddaughters. it was really great. I could have stayed a week because I didn't get to do any photos in the town of Gettysburg at all. deb

The Mason's monument at the cemetery was inspiring to me as I belong to a lodge. The best part was the 360 degree diorama.

Ther were probable 200,000 men on both sides but there were an estimated 52,250 soldiers killed in battle, which was alot for a 3 day battle. My great, great uncle was wounded there.

I've been to Gettysburg about 45-50 times over the last 10 years as a tour guide, leading mainly 8th graders.
There are CD's that you can put in your car and drive around the battlefield with it. Can you ask questions of the CD? Yes, you can. Will it answer back? No, it won't! The best way to visit the battlefield is to hire a Licensed Battlefield Guide at the Visitors Center. They will take you around in your own vehicle for 2-3 hours, telling you about the battle and answering any and all questions that you might have. This is what my company does. These men and women are highly informative and are always striving to learn new things about the battle and the men and women that were there at that time.
Before you leave home, see the "Gettysburg" movie that came out with Martin Sheen, Jeff Daniels, etc.. . Once there go thru the Visitors Center, see the Cyclorama, get your Guide. After you're finshed with the tour then you can go back out and explore on your own. Places to eat in town would be The Farnsworth House and the Dobbin Tavern Inn.

Become a student of what happened and where. This will help you to get the photos so they tell a story. If you don't know what happened, then it is just a bunch of monuments that mean nothing.

We did the battlefield this spring before the 150 anniversary. Opted to hire one of the certified guides that are available through the Visitors Center. They drive your vehicle which allows you to shoot. A wealth of information, they can also suggest places you may want to come back to depending on light, weather and personal interests. An investment worth the price.

Looks like you've already discovered what my suggestion would be, which is to explore the city of Gettysburg. It's a beautiful Pennsylvania town with lots of inviting architecture.

You'd probably do this anyway, but be sure to climb the two old towers on the battlefield itself for some different perspectives.
