Caught this guy eating the leaves on my young orange tree. He will become a swallowtail butterfly (black and white). Used my 18-135mm lens at 100 mm. This lens focuses like a macro at 100mm but will not expand to 135mm without going to manual focus.

All three images are soft focus; nothing is sharp. This is typical of using a kit zoom lens at its longest focal length, in this case, 135-mm.

No matter the focal length chosen, you cannot acquire a true macro photograph with your kit zoom lens.

Thanks for the comment. I don't have a macro lens. That is on the list of thing to get. What would you recommend? I take more landscapes and bird pics. I need to upgrade this lens but have become fond of it.

If you want to use your kit zoom lens for normal photography, try to NOT use either end focal lengths. For best resolution with this lens, stay between 30-mm to about 115-mm.

A true macro lens will be a serious commitment of capital, and the cost range is significant. One of the best buys for pristine results is the Tamron 90-mm macro lens: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Tamron-90mm-f-2.8-Di-Macro-Lens-Review.aspx

If I had to replace my Nikkor 105G macro lens, I would purchase a Sigma 150-mm or the Sigma 105-mm macro lens.
