I bought a new Nikon 7100 from Costco and took it back because the telephoto lens was making a grinding sound and shutter seemed to be jumping. Guess what... The next one also did the same. Has anyone had this problem? Is this something I have to live with?

I bought my D7100 as soon as it was available, had it ever since and have over 14,000 shutter actuations, never had any problems or noise from any of the lenses I use on it. I have two AF-S lenses that are smooth and quiet, and several AF-D lenses that use the internal motor, they are also fast, smooth and quiet (a little louder then the AF-S lenses, but in a good way :))

I have had my D7100 for 2 years & never had a problem. If a lens is making abnormal noises, it is a lens problem--nothing to do with the camera. At a guess, I would say that the shutter noise that you 'seem' to hear is just the 'normal' sound that most cameras make when the shutter operates. I daresay if you tried another 10, they will all sound the same.

Is this happening with one lens or all of them? Are the lenses VR? Is it 4 clicks when the camera is turned on?
Thanks for your comments. I am an amateur photographer and have only had one other SLR camera....a Canon which made a great sound with both lenses as I took pictures. The noise with my Nikon 7100 is only present with the 55-300 mm VR lens as it focuses. It takes good pictures.

Shutter jumping??? What does that mean?

Never had any issues with the D7100. Primarily use it with the 105 vr macro lens. and secondly with the 16-85 VRg. Neither makes any unusual noise.

Does the noise come all the time or just on start up? Can you hold the camera with the lens facing down and not have the noise? If it doesn't make the noise when held lens down when turned on it is in the lens.

Same here. Run the numbers on Nikon's site an see if it's a refurb .
I have a d7100 and a 55-300 but don't have any grinding or shutter jumping with about 1 year of use. Sounds more like the lens, Is it 2 different cameras and 2 different lens or is it the same lens you are experiencing the problem with?
Are you talking about video or stills? You will hear lens noises when shooting video. I would take the lens back. The camera body is probably ok.

Texas1833,
I am currently waiting for a D7100 but I just sold a 2 year old D7000 which had the same issues you are describing. I can say that it sounds like all is OK. What is happening is when you press the shutter half way down the auto-focus kicks in which, depending on the lens, will have different types of motor sounds and, yes, the image you see in the viewfinder can jump. This is just the way the auto-focus works with that lens. As a test just turn your auto-focus to manual and all this will not happen. I believe that some people are just more sensitive to this action and once you know what it is it should not bother you.
I hope this helps.

When I use the Nikon 18-140mm, the image in the viewfinder appears to jump to the left and up. Its disconcerting because I think the image will be blurred...but it's not. Only happens with this lens. I'm sending it back to Nikon for servicing because it seems the aperture blades are sticking. Not sure if the "jumping" is related or not but I'll let Nikon figure it out.
