Recieved My new toy. Not what I expected in a good way. This is not your average bridge camera. I had a Canon SX20 it was OK but this camera has it beat by a mile it has so many options its going to take awhile to learn it.Go Slow and practice. Anyone else experienced this camera??

You are going to love it! Especially the image quality. Don't worry that it only shoots in Jpeg. It is a non issue with Sony.

I have the HX300 not the HX400. When I first got it, I was a little unhappy with the shots...they looked blah. I knew the camera was capable of better (see James56's pictures) so I asked James56 for help. I don't know if you will run into this or not, but just in case...here's what he told me to to do. And I quote...
"Tip 1: Your HX300 does have HDR, to use it, you have to turn the selector wheel on top the camera to "SCN" then select the icon with the sun (in a square) next to a "+" symbol. It's officially named "Backlight Correction HDR". This shoots 3 images in rapid succession (at different EV levels) then combines them into one image.
Tip 2: Your HX300 can make improvements to sharpness and color in camera. But can only do this in manual modes. To set up the camera, turn the selector wheel on top the camera to any of the manual modes. I use "M" for manual the most. Once selected, you then click on the menu button on back of the camera. This brings up a bunch of available setting options. Thumb down through the items till you get to "Color Mode". I changed mine from standard to vivid. This gives you more colorful images. Continue to thumb down the settings to one called "Sharpness". I changed mine from standard to "+".
"

I also changed the Saturation and Contrast to "+" on mine.

Like I said I don't know if you will run into the same thing on the HX400, but if you do and before you consider sending it back... I was seriously thinking about selling my HX300 until I followed James's tips.

Happy Shooting!!

I have the H400 which is very similar to yours. Different lens, sensor & processor, and more options but, the same MP rating. Given the opportunity, I'd trade for the HX400 in a heart beat.

Congratulations on your new camera purchase. It is going to take some time to learn this camera. One of the most important things with a Superzoom is to hold very still when taking zoomed shots. Just the slightest movement can ruin a otherwise perfect shot. That will take some time and practice. Hope you enjoy your new camera, take some time to learn it's controls and abilities, practice a bunch. Have fun now...just to tease you, here's a couple shots with a Sony HX300....your's is even better with its more advanced image processor.

I am very satisfied with my HX100V and compared to my Canon T1i/500d the pictures are very clear and is almost as good as a DSLR and easy to learn (in comparison). When I first got my HX100V, I took a picture of the full moon in daytime, handheld and it was not too bad! I think it used HDR taking three shots and producing ONE very nice photo. I'll bet your new camera will serve you well.
