I am a new photographer and have some very simple questions. I feel lost in simple terms. Have always used a point and shoot camera but it has served its purpose. Now I am going to Alaska and would like to have a camera that will help me see things at a distance. Help Thanks Martha

Hello Martha and welcome to the forum. Try out the new Canon SX60. You might like it. 8-)
Welcome to the family :)
The bridge cameras (bridging the gap between point n shoot and more expensive SLR's) are great for long-distance shots, and can take you from full auto to full manual, at your leisure and comfort level of learning.
Canon SX50, with the 60 upcoming
Nikon P600
Panasonic Lumix, many others
Try them to see which fit feels best for you.
Budget pretty much determines what you will get . Many good systems out there . Check with Camera clubs or good store and handle a few cameras
see what feels good . Clerks will help you make a decision.
Welcome to the UHH Martha.

Welcome to the site Martha. Not sure where you are in CT but if you are near Hartford, stop into the Camera Bar on Asylum St. They can show you cameras in all price ranges and you can hold the cameras to see what fits your hand.
