I've retired from the teaching profession, enjoy photography and have a question. My Canon 10D's port (that connects cord to computer) is broken. Should I have the camera fixed or use a card reader?

Welcome to the family!

Many folks prefer card readers to the cable. I have a newer laptop which has a built-in SC card slot and found it to be much, much faster than the cable.

A card reader will be fine assuming that all else is OK with your camera.

Welcome to the Hog, Bruce77. You'll find lots of friends & plenty of good advice here. I use the SD slot on my laptop for 1 of my cameras & a card reader for the CF cards my other camera uses. The card reader works just as well as using the slot and they're fairly inexpensive.

Camara is great. That's why I don't have a newer model. Everything works great except that port. Thanks for your reply.

I do not use the cables , I always use readers. So use a reader and enjoy the camera.

Welcome to the Hog Bruce. Repairs to the camera will most likely cost you more than the camera is worth, go with the
card reader.

Welcome Bruce. I have always used a card reader. I don't like wearing out the camera battery downloading files.

Welcome to UHH Bruce. I love using a card reader. It works great on any computer I want to load my pics on. I also have a built in card reader on my lap top and home desktop computer.
