My daughter has taken up snorkeling and wants to take under water photos and videos. She is not into DSLR's (as far as I know), she is looking for something simple that won't get in her way while swimming in the Pacific. Any recommendations? :)

Yes, the sea life. check out their web site. They have a camera that will fit the bill. I think the present model is a reefmaster mini. But that could have changed since I was on their web site

You might want to check the Underwater Photography Forum here on UHH. I'm sure someone there will be able and willing to help. TNmike

Go to Bestbuy.com, point and shoot cameras, under features check "waterproof", you get 70+ cameras, in spec they tell if for use in rain or underwater and even give how far down they are waterproof, in first dozen I saw models good for 32-82 foot depth.

There are of course others and other places, just this was a few minutes on google.

You are welcome. Home alone, on line, time on hands, retired teacher with lots of practice at online research. It gave me something to do.

Hello,

If she wants just a fun/simple underwater/out of water camera that is inexpensive and takes great pictures and video, check out the Fuji Finepix XP70.
I purchased my this Spring at Sam's Club, on sale for $150.00.
I use mine while kayaking mostly but have used it underwater numerous times for fun.
Good luck Jim B

I think the Olympus Stylus TOUGH TG-3 is a good option.

For a more complex option, I got the Sony RX-100, a Ikelite housing, and Ikelite flash when I was heading to the Great Barrier Reef last year.

Jamers, I recently went to Hawaii and wanted to take underwater pictures while snorkeling. After looking at all of my options I decided on this water proof bag.... I would recommend this as a starter anyway...then move on to a better camera. The picture below is from my cell phone in the bag....right out of the camera/phone....

Oly, Fuji, and Sony all have good cameras waterproof to snorkeling depths. Also look at GoPro for great video and stills.

Have you looked at a GoPro. Had mine to 140 feet. Vidio looks good. Younger people really like them. Can use them everywhere. Battery will not last on a two tank dive. In may not be as good a camera as some of the more popular underwater cameras and ones most camera buffs use. The GoPro web site has some really nice vidios to view. Also chech out a good filter system.

The Nikonos by Nikon is a favorite of mine...reliable, simple and waterproof. Yes, it is a 35mm film camera, but if you are not taking great numbers of underwater photos it may be a good answer for you. It can use several interchangable lenses, and it has a really good selection of accessory items, like flash, framing devices, etc. They are reasonably priced (last time I looked) at reliable stores like KEH, Adorama and B&H. Good luck.
