Greetings, Hogs! I turned traitor and recently purchased a 5D Mark III (my trusty Nikon D200 will be relegated for macro work). I want to purchase a general purpose flash for the 5D with the following characteristics:

- compact
- tiltable
- TTL
- good guide number
- good battery life

Yup! I want it all, but know I will have to settle.

I want compact as I travel a lot and don't believe in bringing too much photo gear (1 long lens and my point and shoot only). I see many flashes on the market and some with my requirements but looking to tap into the hog experience base to help me further sort through my list.

The 430 EX II might be close to what you're looking for it is an older model, but with a few bells & whistles and very reliable. But it is not the most powerful of flashes. I too shoot with the 5D M III and I have a few 600 EX RT's and I absolutely love them. To me, they are not too big to take along anywhere ( I have a fairly big camera bag that holds flash gear only) anyway. That bag goes everywhere, my camera goes!

If you want something really small, the Sunpak RD2000 can fit in a shirt pocket. It tilts but does not swivel. Nissin (I think it was Nissin, I didn't pay much attention to the ad) just came out with a relatively small flash that tilts and swivels. I don't remember its designation, but I think it costs around $250. The RD2000 costs around $70.

I now own both Nikon and Canon products as well and find myself in a constant argument with myself, fueled by the never ending (and hilarious at times) war that goes on here incessantly. Cognitive dissonance, anyone?
