A friend of mine has a Cannon Rebel XTI and recently started getting these weird magenta blowouts in her images. Has anyone ever experienced this or know what causes it?

Im going to guess, chromatic aberration and over processing.

thanks tradio... I was trying to determine if anyone has seen this occur as a result of a "physical defect" with the camera as they are straight from the camera. She is going to bring me the camera to look at (you know how friends think just because you can fix computers and such at work, you must be able to build their new home - LOL). She is a sweet older lady so I told her I'd take a look and not knowing a whole lot, figured I'd start with the basic question to guide me in the direction(s) to look for answers.
Thanks for your initial insights and please feel free to let me know if you know of any "causes" that might be specific to a setting or malfunction that requires professional repair.
Cheers, many thanks and appreciations, ~erik

When take pictures outside set your color balance for daylight. Set ISO 100-200 F-stop from f8 to f16 depe5 on the available light you have.

The magenta seems to show up in all areas that should have been rendered completely white - the areas of overexposure within the image. It shouldn't be like this. I really think the sensor is malfunctioning and possibly defective.

I have no idea what is causing this but I would suggest resetting the camera to factory default. Thake a few shots it the out of the box settings. Maybe the camera was set to a setting which caused the problem. If returning the camera to it's default setting does not solve the problem it may have to be repaired My .02 cents worth. which might be all it's worth. The advise not the camera

Are these photos SOOC or PP? Please post at least one original and check "store original" box; DO NOT PREVIEW!

I have run a few "tests" on these images and I think the magenta areas are all blown highlights (as suggested by Rook. I used the removal tools to eliminate the magenta to see what was underneath, and in every case the underlying area was over exposed. There are very few signs of CA in other parts of the images.

When you get the camera I would suggest a reset, remove any filters from the lens, then few shots in a shady area. Do not use any scene modes, use base ISO, auto WB or cloudy. Follow that with bright area, and if possible with a change of lens.

Compare those shots with deliberate over exposure shots.

If the magenta recurs, then possibly either the sensor or the processor is on the blink.

Also check the lens mount - unlikely but any looseness?

The camera needs a new sensor - overexposed highlights are white, not magenta, and the images are otherwise properly exposed with ok color and white balance. A trip to Canon is in order.

There are some processing packages that can show up over/under exposed areas in such a way , so you can see what you are recommended to modify with the tool sets given. Before doing anything to the camera try processing with a different package. Do the images look like this when reviewed in the camera?

just a thought

I had this problem with my d7100 when I ordered it. Straight outta the box it was doing this. Sent it back for an exchange. I'm guessing there is a problem with her sensor.

Strange, but I get the same thing on my plasma TV occasionally. Probably for a different reason.

When asking questions like this it is best to click on "store original" to see if the camera settings weres causing it. David
