Is the Nikon D7100 worth my while?

Greetings! I spent most of my youth doing photography DAILY with my father who was a semi-professional photographer. I am now ready to graduate up to a worthy Digital SLR Nikon (my preferred camera). I have been doing a lot of reading and have set my sights on the D7100. I am looking for all the input I can get!

Great camera. You can get the 5300 or the 5200 for less, but you will be giving up some aspects that may be necessary. If you don't have a lot of old AF lenses, and you don't mind getting the settings from the menu, you can probably get by with a 5200 or a 5300. Both of them are worth the money.

The 5200 and 5300 are advanced armature, the 7100 is semi professional. So it depends on how you want to use it.

Welcome. I have had a D5200 for over a year now and it is a great camera. It's hard to buy a bad one these days. I have my sights on the D7100 or it's successor, which should be announced this month. I would hold off a week or two and see what shakes out. If and when I move up, the D5200 will become my second body and can share lenses with the D7100. Hope you get what you're looking for and share your work here in the gallery section of the Hog.

Going up each model in the Nikon "line-up" gives you advantages:
1. D3300
2. D5300
3. D7100
3a. (D300s/D9300) <discontinued/rumored>
---
4. D610
5. D750
6. D810
7. D4s

The first for are DX/APS-C cameras, while the last four are FX/full frame cameras. The D7100 has most of the best features of all the DX cameras, and most consider it better than the D3300/D5300 (a vocal dissenter will comment soon, I'm sure). While the full frame cameras have some advantages over the APS-C cameras, they also have some big disadvantages: cost, size, weight, and cost. So the D7100 strikes a very good balance.

It might depend on your needs Guardian. In addition, my viewpoint will be a little skewed since I just bought one. So far I am very pleased.

Check my post, A quickie before work. No processing whatsoever.

At least as important as the camera are the lenses you choose. Think of it as a package deal. If too much of your funds go into the D7100 you'll have to skimp on the lens(es). You would be better off going to a less expensive body like a D5200 or D5300 and a better lens or two.

If money is not a problem, the D7100 is a good choice.

D7100 is less than 2 years old. I suspect it's replacement some time next year.

I moved from the D7000 to the D7100, and I love it. I don't have any negatives to report. I use it with my D610 because the controls are almost identical. As far as I'm concerned, your only other choice would be the D610, but the D7100 is a winner.

I bought a D7100 shortly after they hit the stores back in 2013, started with a D3000, then a D5100 refurbed camera. The D7100 has been my daily shooter for a year now and I can not think of anything bad to say about it. Love the 24 MP raw shooting!

It will use the newer AF-S lenses with the internal focusing motors, or the older AF lenses with the focus screw - plus it is an AI camera, so really old lenses will meter with it provided they are aperture indexed of course! Good choice!
