That old adage must be for shallow-water sailors. As a Naval Officer, I sailed a good many oceans, and very rarely did we ever see red skies, either in the morning or at night. Evidently, land-borne haze (the element that causes red skies) is swept away by fresh sea breezes.

Interesting--I've never heard that before.
