I'm new to both Lightroom and Photoshop CC. Like all of you I get a lot of commercials for both "presets" and "actions". Are they both the same thing but one for LR and one for PS CC. I have purchased presets for LR but have not gotten any actions for PS CC. I'm confused  Can anyone enlighten me please?

As I understand it, a preset is a group of settings that have been saved and can be applied to an image in Lightroom.

An action is a set of commands that have been saved in Photoshop. Actions have more functionality, but most of the things you could do with an action couldn't be done in Lightroom anyway.

thanks for the prompt reply. That said, are actions also things like: sepia tone, color shifts, HDR? The ones I saw just seem to be those type of things and I've got a jillion of them in LR.

:)

Think of an action like a macro in excel or word. You start recording before doing things on an image. I will often record an action when following along with a youtube tutorial.

Actions are nothing more than macro for repetitive tasks. They are time savers, nothing else. You can create your own actions. Actions can call a 'preset'. Actions are editable and can be interactive.

Presets is just that, presets. That includes anything from the workspace to editing.

Now that sounds handy. Do you mean you write down what is being described and then go into PS and record each step of what the video was explaining. I such a novice at this that every time I see something that looks like I could use it I get even further behind in studying. Going a bit bonkers trying to assimilate all the information I'm gathering.

Amen!! I just upgraded to Adobe CC too and feel a little overwhelmed at all the options and commands and possibilities. Throw in all the plug-ins that do so much cool stuff and it becomes insane. It's a blast learning all this new stuff, but it can become overwhelming with all the choices available. I can sit for hours with a photo just going through all the presets in Lightroom, Topaz, Nik Effects, DXO Labs, etc, just playing with how the photo looks! Seems I have more of a case of SAS (software acquisition syndrome) than GAS!!

Nice to finally put a name on it! Have you tried one called "Fluid Mask". Absolutely great for removing back grounds and is a plug in for CC.

In case you're not clear on Lightroom Presets these are simply a way to use a 'Preset' sequence of steps to edit your picture. You can either use these as an end result or a starting point. You can see the effect of each one by going down the list one after the other.
When you have edited an image to your satisfaction you can 'Sync' the edit to all your similar edits and just make fine adjustments as you revue them OR if you expect to see lots of similar images after your first edit you can save this as a user Preset and then apply it to an image or all the images in an Import whenever you wish.
Very useful and infinitely adjustable.
