Is there a formula to fiqure the maximum distance at which the image quality (IQ) falls off ? Can you do an example: D90, 300mm lens, a duck on a lake. What is the maximum distance that the duck can be from you before the IQ drops off ? Then compare to FX sensor with same lens. Would the image quality be the same at the same distance or can you reach out farther with the FX sensor?
You'd have to use a 450mm lens on an FX camera to get the same image as a 300mm on the D90. Image quality... lower iso's- who knows? Lower light situations where the higher iso would be needed, that would probably go with FF sensor.
The D90 is a great camera, very good IQ. I doubt in normal circumstances you would see that much of a difference.
If you're shooting test charts you might see it. Personally, I would rather shoot ducks than test charts.
I shoot with a D200, D300s and D700, so yes, I have some experience with real world usage.

Maybe I'm expecting too much from my equipment. I'm trying to get usable images of ducks on a lake that are about 800 to 900 feet away. even at 100% mag on computer, the images are crappy. Maybe I should stick to macro.
Shutter speed high enough? Focus correct? Aperture setting? Which lens? (Nikon I hope)
You'd have to shoot them with a gun to get them close enough to photograph them with a macro.

I would guess the image would be hard to get if it is passed 30 to 40 yards. Much passed that would be very good camera handling. Birds are pretty hard to shoot, they are a small target if to far away. Now deer can be a little farther.

Nikon D90 - Nikon 300 f4 & I also have a nikon 80-400. I usually try to keep ISO at 400 or less and set aperature at f8. Shutter speed is between 1/250 - 1/500. I always use a tripod.
Is it just ducks that are soft? (they are fuzzy critters) I assume you've gotten sharp photos with either lens.
When I'M shooting wildlife I try to keep my shutter speed around 1500 or higher and depending how far away the critter is my aperture at 2.8 and ISO at 200 but no higher than 800.

The thing I use to get good shots of ducks that are far away is real cheap. Bread! ;) You just throw it out and they get real close. I try to keep some in the truck, have a lake at work.

Ya, the lenses are fine. pics are fine until I go over about 300 feet. Ya, ya, I know. don't shoot pics past 300 feet! LOL I quess thats what I'm trying to find out. Jusy how far is reasonable?

I'm still laughing! Got way too many pics of the bread eaters. The hooded mergansers don't like people OR bread. Maybe I should set up a blind!
Just googled hooded mergansers.
Cool lookin' ducks!
Sounds like Erv's blind idea is one to look into.

Something even funnier when I started in photography, sit down for this one! I use to go to the lake with a duck call! Ok stop laughin, I figured if the hunters could use them why couldn't I. Well did it work? NO, but I got a lot of looks from everyone around me :)

I just got a small one from Walmart. $35. So far it works great in the back yard on birds and deer. I have been baiting the deer with corn. Almost have them in the blind with me. But boy they
sure don't like the shutter going off. Still working on that one.

I won't be able to get that image out of my head for a while. Camera in one hand- duck call in the other. What an image. I'll still be laughing in the morning.
