Under HIPAA you can't share ANY medical information unless the patient specifically allows it ... and the fines for those of us working with patient data approach $10,000 per incident along with up to 10 years in federal prison. At the hospital where I work HIPAA violations are cause for immediate dismissal.
Thus the 'can't tell you' tag line ... :)

Which is extremely frustrating when you took your son to the cardiologist (at the age of 25) who discovered his enlarged aorta which, in turn, saved his life....and despite your actions, because he's over 18 can't talk to you.
Also, if you happen to mention anything to the doctor about him that you want to remain private (they can listen but not talk), it still goes in his digital record. Whatever happened to confidentiality. There is none.
