If you have to choose between the Tameron 150-600 and the Proposed Sigma 150-600 lens how do you determine which one to buy. The main use would be Birds and wildlife.

It would depend on how much money was needed to purchase the proposed Sigma.

The point is that you don't know if they're "about the same". I would never buy on speculation, even given Sigma's reputation. Why not wait until it hits the street and has some real "hands on" reviews?

All things being equal, you would need to do your homework to determine which is most suitable for you personally. Both have been highly anticipated and indications to date suggest the Tamron (which has been available for some time now) is a very good product. You can bet the Sigma will be more than equal to the task. Although the Tamron's performance has been well documented, it could not really be compared to anything.... Sigma is about to change all that.

Although well intentioned, be aware that other photographer's advice may be driven as much by brand loyalty as by actual performance. Certainly take this on board but also consider information from independent reviews that you are confident are not so influenced. Read the inevitable comparisons.... and there will be many with these. I suspect many photographers are waiting to see the shoot-out comparisons so be prepared to join the queue.

Based on my personal as well as business dealings with both companies.....if the prices were equal I could not even consider the Tamron. BUT, we still do not know the Sigmas price, and the lens is certainly more than "equal" if we are to believe the published pre-release specs.

Hey Tox,.... me again. You may wish to reconsider this purchase as I just read on one of your previous posts that you had a 170-500mm Sigma for sale as you rarely used it and found it to be cumbersome. I don't have either, however I suggest both the Tamron and new Sigma will be in the same ball park. :?:

I rent sometimes to determine if I want to buy. I've rented from lensrentals.com numerous times and have been impressed with them. There are others also.

I'm waiting for the comparisons between these two lenses too, ToxDoc, and I have little experience with either Sigma or Tamron to date, so I'm not biased toward either. However, one factor that might tip the decision for me is the weight difference. The Sigma is two pounds heavier according to the specs I've seen. For me, hiking up a mountain to shoot pictures of raptors with an extra two pounds is a detail I have a hard time overlooking. If the image quality and price are the same, the lighter lens wins for me (though the weather/dust seals on the Sigma vs. none on the Tamron complicate this decision).

I'm hoping the IQ of the Sigma is so much better that it makes the extra weight (and wait) worthwhile.

I'm sure none of my rambling has helped you make a decision, however, perhaps you feel a little better knowing someone else is considering the same dilemma. I'd almost ordered the Tamron when I heard the Sigma was coming later this year, so I waited and bought a used Nikon 80-400 for my immediate need.
