Bikini Barrel Race...
As I promised here are some shots from a charity barrel race..the pictures are not the best. The morning shots were pretty good but as the day progressed the photos became very grainy. The weather did not change and neither did my settings. All of the photographers were having the same problem and most left before the race was over..I stayed for 8 hrs going home at 5:30PM. Does the heat of the day (it was 93% at 4PM) have anything to do with this. By the way the race raised $12,000.
Nothing like a fine horse travelling at high speed around a barrel....those werenhorses, weren't they?

Oh, my goodness! Not a time to have wardrobe malfunction. I think I rode in shorts just once. The saddle sores weren't worth being cooler. Anyway, you got some good shots to document the event, and it's good so much money was raised.
I saw barrel racing at a rodeo in Cody, Wyoming. Very exciting and fun to watch. The participants were teenage girls and some even looked like pre-teen. Is the barrel racing traditionally an event limited to girls and women?

Pretty much. Barrel racing is a gymkhana event often seen at Western horse shows. Others include Pole Bending and Keyhole. Barrel Racing is the only one that consistently makes it into pro rodeo circuits and can be a money maker.
I recently attended the annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo and plan to post a few of the photos (taken from the grandstand, unfortunately). Too bad the organizers have not seen fit to include Barrel Racing among the events.
Hey man, we have barrel racing around here, but do not wear such "cool" outfits. I must say, your racing must be fun to watch.

Ever go to the Williams Ranch rodeo?

During my career in broadcast television, ESPN, Fox Sports,
other networks, I shot tons and tons of rodeo over a lot of years. But this! Now this would make rodeo much more interesting - what fun!!! Nice shots.
Women's beach volleyball rules REQUIRE skimpy attire, and the requirement has vastly expanded the viewership of that sport. If rodeo sponsors adopted the rule and applied it to gymkhana events, it would probably raise viewership stats.
There used to be a charreado (Mexican style rodeo) held on summer weekends at Rancho Padillo in the foothills near Pacoima (outskirts of Los Angeles). It was indirectly responsible for endless carnage. Because the attendees would get drunk on beer all day. (The owner and event operator didn't bother with an alcohol license, nor with cutting off booze an hour or two before the end of the event.) And then, drunk and sun-blinded and sleepy, they would race each other down the narrow-twisting Little Tujunga Canyon Rd., blinded by the evening sunset.
The racers counted coup and sometimes death on pedestrians, horses, caballeros y caballeras, telephone poles, corrals, and an endless number of innocent cars and drivers. The death toll and property damage was gargantuan every weekend, and I'm not even factoring in the cost of the many ambulance responses, police responses, and helivac trips.
Do they have gymkhana events at charreados? I know that those Mexicans are reknowned for their lariat-twirling skill.
Barrel racing is getting to be big time money..one of the gals in this race won three saddle and a little over $4000 for the weekend. She had to attend three races in towns that were separated by 60 miles. There were 232 riders for this one day event. Its not unusual for the bigger races to give away truck, trailers and tons of cash. I can go to three barrel races every week and it slows down to 2 in the winter..and these are all very well attended. Just wish the lighting was more ideal for covered arenas.

Most are young ladies (cowgirls) but we have seven local men that race with them..last year we had a couple of guys in the bikini race in their bikini's. It was so much fun and the guys were real sports.
No.one is my favourite, the horse is not bad either.
Nice captures.....ok...More pix now...
