Many thanks to all who commented. My questions were answered- and much valuable additional info was offered. For this I am grateful and comfortable with my frequent decision to shoot or to print SQUARE.
Now, will someone please tell me what the hell LOL stands for? bob

I think I recall reading 30+ years ago a defense of the square format format in a Hasselblad advert. As best I can remember the argument was that since the eyes doesn't do square so well, the boundaries of a square format image are weak/un-confining and thus the mind of the viewer wanders beyond the frame and considers what may lie beyond. The result being a richer experience.

So ce it was in a Hasselblad ad and they were chosed by the Appolo program to go to the moon, I knew any thing the said must be true.

I shot many Weddings on my Hasselblads... Two main things I liked, was no need to swivel the camera over on the tripod from groups, to individual persons. And the Square format gave me extra shapes to frame pictures in the album...Square... circular...rectangle...oval...arch.. Of course, quality negatives to work from.

I have a film Hasselblad and I love square format. With digital some cameras have an aspect ratio. 1:1 is square. Try Panasonic Lumix LX7

Thanks Moonhawk. I was serious---figured it probably meant "lots of luck"--but that didn't fit with some of the contexts. Text-ing is something I've never done---being a computerly challenged old geezer. Bob

My Canon 6D shoots in square format. Just looked. But I prefer an aspect ratio of 3:2 for landscape photos.

Oldtigger: Thanks for your comments. You're the most positively negative re:
square format so far.
Oh; love your square avatar! bob

While the square format can be useful in photography most humans do not see the world in square format. Yes I have used all of the cameras you mentioned and do miss my Hasselblads.

My bridge camera, Canon SX40, offered square format in its menue options. I'm now using a Nikon D610 and loving it. Is there any way to shoot square in the D610? In any Nikon DSLR? Any DSLR?
I use the outer lines on the VF grid in framing a square shot and it's difficult not to be distracted by the stuff I intend to remove in PP.
Rollie---Hassy---Mamamamaya---you're missed!
Your thoughts are most welcome.

Square photos are of old age...... They are hard to print today. If you want to print today, you have to crop the unprinted paper off. The printer, if you ask for a square neg or file to be printed, will crop it when they print, but it may not be they way you want...... Is there a reason you want square?
