Scooper plane

We have so many fires in our area that they have called in the scooper planes..these planes scoop down to the lake, fill the hold and then head back to the fire. I was behind a knoll and did not see the "scoop" but will try this week end to get a full view. The fire is about 10 miles as the crow flies and these are much better than the Erickson helicopter drops..they hold a lot more water.

Good shots have never seen a scooper plane. Will keep an eye out to see if you get some of them in action.

I was surveying the aftermath of a fire a few years ago and we found a whole bunch of roasted trout on the side of a hill. I was baffled until I found out that scooper planes had been used on that fire because of a nearby lake they could re-load in. It had me baffled for a couple of hours as I had never seen these before that time either.

Here is the skinny on the first plane:

I was stationed at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, MD from 67-70 as a Photographer's Mate. At some point during that time, a couple of these birds were brought to the test center for demonstration/evaluation. I was assigned the job of shooting stills while another PH shot movies with a 16mm Arriflex. Very interesting watching them scoop water from the Chesapeake Bay. I had never thought about them scooping up fish as well.

This is a link to a phote of the water intake on that type aircraft.

I find it hard to believe that a trout could be "scooped up" and still be recognizable as a fish.

That intake sure seems small for all the water they scoop up in such a short time..Thanks for posting.
