question....how do you download the software update if you computer does not have a card reader or card slot ( at least I don't think it does....have never seen it !!)

Some laptops have a card slot to insert an SD type card. You will need to check your manual, or tell us what make/model laptop you have. If you don't have a card slot, then you will need to get a card reader that supports your type of memory card that your camera uses.
You download the new firmware code to your pc/laptop, and extract it to the memory card for the camera, and follow the update instructions on the Nikon site.
