There are some Nikon Models, I think the 28-70, 70-200, and 300mm f/2.8 that came in white or greyish at one point.

What was the deal with that?

Also, i'm setting the over/under for Canon users making a joke about them wanting to be like Canon at 3.5..

The 180 f/2.8 was also available with a grey barrel.

Marketing. Canon has said that the reason that some lenses are white so as to lessen heat of the sun. Nonsense. It's all marketing. When people see white lenses at an event, they know that the pros shoot Canon. So canon regards that as free advertising. And think that because people see white lenses they will be more likely to buy Canon. Nikon thought that if the Nikon pros shot "grey" lenses p[eople would be more likely to want Nikon stuff.

Actually Nikon did offer the light grey option on several of their lenses at the request of National Geographic originally.

Know why Canons L type lenses have a red ring?
That's the color Canon users see when they hear the price tag! ;)

And here I thought the red ring was to help us know which end the lens was on versus the viewfinder. Before L lenses, I got lots of shots of a blurry eyeball ...

You know, hands on lens all the time, oil dirt, white. Maybe pretty but I don't see it as functional. Black is beautiful.

Are your hands that dirty when you shoot? And if they are, you could easily use some wipes to wipe off the lens... they are metal and won't dissolve if they come in contact with moisture, you know!

when I shoot there is no limit to the places I am crawling around on. One of the big reasons I don' go to weddings dressed like James Bond at the casino. Doing an engagement I am not going to constantly wipe my hands. Unless the bride hits me with cake instead of the groom.

Yes. my hands would be dirty. BUT, on a related note. I knew a guy who's keyboard on his laptop was white. Chemical issues with his body. White lens for him would have been great. Others, I am not so sure.

White stands out too much. I have read this in articles about camera security. It's like driving around in a red Ferrari. I prefer my silver Fit.

Someone years ago told me that Nikon was first to do the white lens, years before Canon started making them. T/F I don't know.

I did read Nikon done it to keep their lense cooler when shooting in the sun, Canon only done it because they thought it looked cool.

Canon started using white on some of their lenses in the 70's in the FD mount. The oldest Nikon I have ever seen with the grey paint was an AF 80-200mm F2.8 push-pull non-D model. (1988)
Anyone else seen anything older?
