A hopefully quick question with even more hopefully easy answer. I just upgraded from the Canon 40d to the Canon 70d. I put the card in my card reader opened up Lightroom to download the photos and Lightroom said "not able to download raw images" so no photos downloaded.
I have not input the new CD that came with the camera to my computer yet. Is it necessary to do that first before images can be downloaded?
I love photography but am not computer savy. Someone else set up my 40d for me years ago.
Thx,
Laurie

Which version of lightroom do you have? It might need upgraded to be able to read the 70D files. According to Adobe the version of camera raw that supported your 40D was version 4.2. To work with 70d files you need version 8.2.

If LR was set up for you when you got your 40D, jethro779 is almost certainly correct. The software has to be newer than the camera in order for it to recognize the raw files. The 70D came out last year, the 40D in 2007.

If you are not comfortable updating LR, you can get Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 and use it to convert your cr2 files to a dng version which your version of LR can read.

According to Adobe the minimum version of lightroom you need for the 70D is 5.2.

Rather than DNGs, you can also use Canon's Digital Photo Professional to convert your CR2 files to JPG prior to moving onto any version of LR. I find Canon's processing for camera and lens corrections to be more powerful and intuitive than the Adobe tools. DPP can be found on the CD that came with the camera. You can find 'some' documentation and training on the Internet for DPP.

Had the same problem with Elements when I bought a 70D. The ACR Plugin within the program has to be updated. The same problem exists with the 6D. Try a manual update of your editing program. If that doesn't work then you can try manually updating the ACR file. Not really hard to do. There is a chance that the program itself is too old to accept the update. In that case you may have to buy a newer version. If I can be of any help, pm me.

Thank you all. I will try the Canon Digital professional then get the updated version of Lightroom.
Thank you again,

The Canon Digital Professional on the disk that came with your camera will open the RAW photos. If you have an older version already installed, it may not. As far as updating Lightroom, you may want to do a bit of research first. I had Elements 10 when I encountered this problem. I bought the newest version of Elements, 12, thinking it would solve my problem. Nope. The ACR file it came with was 8.0 instead of the necessary 8.2 or 8.3. Whichever. The in-program update feature didn't change that (at that time anyway). I still had to update it manually.

I am sure someone on the Hog has the info you need. I suggest you do a search for Lightroom here on the Hog, particularly the version you may buy. Most likely this question has come up before.

The first use Windows Explorer or Mac folders to copy the files off the card. At least then you know the issue was with your version of LR, not anything with the camera/card/computer connection. Then you can decide if you want to use DPP, upgrade LR, or the DNG converter.

I have a 70D. I use the Canon EOS Utility to download the camera's files -- in raw format -- into a folder (folder name is the date) in Pictures. The EOS Utility is on the CD that came with the camera.

I have Lightroom 5, which has no trouble converting the raw files to DNG and importing those. It can import the CR2 files, but I prefer to convert them to DNG.

If your version of Lightroom cannot accept Canon's raw format, you should still be able to download Adobe's free DNG converter. It is an extra step, but you can use the converter to create DNG files, which should be acceptable to your version of Lightroom. Before I got Lightroom, I used the DNG Converter to allow me to process DNG files in Elements 11, which would not recognize my Canon CR2 files.

Whether or not you can open the photos in your editing program, you can still pull the RAW files off the card and into a file on your computer. From there you can e-mail them or put them onto removable media to give to your friend.
