I've never owned a DSLR. I have a Cannon Power Shot S1-IS camera that has a lot of the features of a DSLR, just not any lens options. Trying to choose between a Nikon D5200 and a Cannon T5i. Both are close to the same price. Anyone with any ideas. Opinions are welcome

I don't think you can make a mistake with either.

Welcome to the Hog from Connecticut. I have the T4i. I was going to get a T5i but there is really no difference when you compare them. The T4i will probably de discontinued soon. There are some great package deals on Amazon.

Try going to a camera store and handle both cameras, so you can get a feel of it, you might prefer one over the other, because you like the button lay-out better, or it is just plain more comfortable to you. Very important in my opinion. As far as specs and features on the cameras itself, you can't go wrong with either one!

I just did that, and I like the feel of the Nikon better. It just feels more balanced.

I think you are right. Lots of what I have been reading on different forums say they are disappointed in the upgrade from the T4i

Wow that is some kind of package deal you just sent. I will be taking a serious look at that. I have always had excellent work service from cannon products. They are top notch when you have questions or problems

It looks like the only difference is in video. The T5i has 1080p. I have a cannon camcorder for videos. It isn't expensive but it does excellent for I need. So that would not make me pay extra for just that feature. I really appreciate you showing me this. I am now leaning toward the T4i and save some bucks.

What is your budget for a lens? Will you go Nikon or Canon?

Like I said ... I love my T4i. I still use the Automatic modes sometime. Sometime you just don't have time to set in Manual mode. The only thing I would get is a bigger SD card. I use a 64 GB card. Make sure it is class 10. Another thing I would get is a better camera strap. The one in the kit is kind of cheap. After all if you are going to spend good money on a camera you want to protect it and be comfortable as well. Here is mine.
