Like the Gorgon Medusa, I'm of several minds. I'm concerned about the militarization of the police. OTOH, isn't a strong response needed when dirtbag mobs are rioting, looting, and burning? Doesn't a weak response ENCOURAGE more violent misbehavior? In the last Los Angeles riots, the police chose a "do nothing" response and the city suffered major damage. And the nationwide broadcasts of looters being unhindered drew would-be looters all the way from the East Coast. Would the city have been better off if the police shot the first dozen looters?
