Hi! I want to purchase a macro lens. I'm looking at the canon 100mm. The IS version is about $400 more. I'll be shooting mostly hand held. Is the IS worth the extra money???
I shoot virtually ALL of my field macro-photography hand-held, and my set-up is far from light-weight.
For years I shot with a used Nikkor 105D (A-F, but no Vibration Reduction), noticing more & more subject blurriness, due minute camera movement. I shot at 1/200-sec at ISO 400, to allow background exposure by sunlight, while my subject is speedlight illuminated. 1/200-sec is still slow enough to be effected by camera movement.
Last year, I upgraded to a used Nikkor 105G (A-F & VR2). I sold my 105D for $425, and paid $800 for 105G (roughly your difference in price). I am now more satisfied with my hand-held macro-photography.
Now if I could only improve my DOF!

I agree with MT Shooter if you're doing hand held shots. If you are shooting with a tripod it wouldn't be as big of an issue. In Macro the slightest movement can ruin your shot. JMHO of course.
