Canon T3i Software up date

Thank you for using Canon products.

Thank you,
I got the Nikon update. It's relatively easy.
Use your computer and get the file they say is the 'firmware update' for your camera.
Best is to put it on your desktop.
Hook your camera up to the computer as if you were going to do photo transfers.
On your camera will be an option for 'firmware update'.
You click that on your camera and then show it the file location of the 'firmware update' on your computer.
When an update starts DO NOT....Repeat....DO NOT interupt the process. It's like updating the BIOS on your computer.

Thank you very much as I have bought over 5 Canon cameras in my life time and this is the first time I have had this happen with an up date. Once again Thank You
When I purchased my Rebel XTI I never registered it and never received any email notices from Canon. I found out about a firmware update from a forum I was reading. I did register my 50d and have received firmware update email notices from Canon. However, I NEVER click on a link in any email I receive. I go to the homepage of the company and locate the appropriate link.
One of the things to consider is that the update can go wrong, especially if you've not been good to Dr. Murphy. If the list of corrected items for the update is not something you really need (like you don't have a Speedlite 270EX II and you don't need Portuguese or Italian menus) then it is best to take a pass. If some future update comes along that is useful, or if you do purchase that Speedlite 270EX II, then you can go through the procedure. Future updates almost always will cover all of the interim changes so you won't need to load multiple updates.
These are not security updates like computers need for protection, so they are not generally 'critical.' If they are critical (like a battery issue), the update information will tell you.
If you registered your camera, go to the Canon web site main page and on the left side, almost in the center, under the new product camera photos, there is an "Other Canon Resources" tab. There, you can find the download area. My understanding is that you MUST have the software that came with your camera installed. Mine included a "EOS Utility" and from what I have read, you must have that (or what they use for the T3i) installed. I know that you have to connect your camera to your computer via the supplied USB cable, because it is going to load directly to your camera. As for the update itself.... Yes, something can go wrong, but then, you could get run over crossing the street too. Downloads via computer are an everyday happening. Microsoft updates constantly. If it goes wrong, you contact Canon Help Desk and do it again. Hope this helps.
P.S. - Over 45 years in computer maintenance and service management (Retired).
They did something similar for the T2i last year.
I got the same email. If you already have the ver 1.01 firmware on your camera then I would not bother with the update unless you have a Speedlite 270EX II or using the Italian and Portuguese language menus.
However if you have ver 1.00 then I would perform the update. Its quick and easy.
Easy update instructions - Download firmware and put on clean SD card. Put card in camera. Power On camera and follow instructions.
You can look on Canon's website and find more detailed instructions.
I have a T3i and I'm not updating yet.
Thank you and I did go out and buy a clean SDHC Card and will down load the file on to it as well. Also the Camera store where i got the camera said they would held me install it to make sure it done right. I do need to learn this as I have 4 canon camera's. Once again thank you very much for your help. Jack F
I just downloaded a update to my 50D and I had to have my flashcard in the camera /it downloaded to the card then to the camera. Make sure to follow the directions to the letter for your camera

Check your Firmware level. Update to the latest. An updated piece of equipment is a happy piece of equipment.

I just updated my T1i. All you need is the firmware file in the root of the SD card and a fully charged battery (or AC adapter)
No Canon Software needed.
While it runs, of course your heart might skip a beat. I've been doing stuff like this for years, my heart still skips.
When it tells you to "Do not turn off or press any buttons" Just stare at it and do as it says.
