I was eyeballing the D7100 since it came out. When the capabilities of the expeed4 chipset were advertised, I wanted to wait and see. I chose the D5300 more for the expeed4 processor than any other features it offered. considering how I am using it now, I would have been just as happy with the D3300. One of my moves since I have working in IT for 17 years, it to wait for about 6 months after anything new comes out before I buy it just to see how well it will be supported by the company and the community. The D5300 came out in November, I bought one in May.

The best camera setup is the one you have in your hand at the time. I'm sure Dan would have no problems getting some great pics with his old Nikon Fs

Once the D7100's successor is announced; the D7100's price should come down. That's when I'll strike...

I've been a Canon shooter for 16 plus years. I presently own a Canon 60D; but am thinking seriously about purchasing a D7100. No I'm not bailing on Canon; I plan on using both. I've never used Nikon before; and my experience tells me to stay away from kit lens. I shoot some of everything; but love portrait work. If I choose one first Nikon Lens (to get my feet wet); what should it be...?

I have several lenses with my D7100. I love my Nikkor 50mm f1.4 G I use it for portraits and it has a very good bokeh at wide apertures.

I have an Nikon 18-70 lens that is pretty good but is a little slow.
I have a Nikon 70-300mm lens that is so so but slow (3.5/5.6 depending on focal length) and no vr so have to use a fast shutter speed. Its ok but would love a better lens.

I also have a Tamron 10-24 mm lens that is pretty good (except it tries to fisheye a little at 10mm) and has macro focusing. I like it as a general landscape lens. It has fair speed.

Hopefully, my next lens will be the Nikon 80-400 mm VR lens. I have used it when working at Nikon, and I love it.. Unfortunately, they wouldn't donate it to me when I retired.. lol.

You worked for Nikon? That sounds like a Photographers dream. I would think you'd have a stockpile of lenses.

Ahhh it was great but as an employee you only get a 10% discount and you have to pay local tax and shipping. I found that I could buy my D7100 from B&H, get more in the package and get free shipping and no tax for much less than Nikon's list minus 10%. But, I did get to check out the lens or lenses of my choice for up to a week at a time and they took the best of us to various places. I got to go to the Albuquerque Balloon Festival (we worked the Nikon Professional Photographers booth at these sites), NFL Playoff games, Super Bowl, NCAA BBall final 4, Bowl Games including the National Championship Bowl, World Cup, Bronx Zoo (Nikon supports them so 8 of us got the behind the scenes photo ability) Fleetweek, etc.. Plus I got to meet a lot of professional Big Name photographers.. Also got to shoot a lot of NYC concerts like Tommy Lee, Rod Stewart, Billy Joel, etc. So the perks were good.
Also got to go to NASA (Houston and FL) for launches and because Nikon does a lot of lens/optics development for the space agency.

Wow you are the Man! I'd love to see your collection of photo's. Too bad about the discount though; image the equipment you'd have? But you certainly can't beat your experiences... That's for sure.

The experience was great as are the people. I have a lot of good friends there (and they are happy I moved to Clearwater Fl as several visit for a few days. Not sure I should have told them about the extra bedroom. lol.

Sounds like a great experience; I'm envious. There's nothing like doing what you love; and calling it a job.

As others have said, a 24-70 takes a lot of beating. Very versatile. OK, it's a bit heavy but not for a chap of your background.

Suggest you borrow or try someone else's first. You will be impressed. :-)

It may be a bit pricey for me right now. I own the Canon 24-70 2.8; and it's the perfect all rounder. As for the weight; I prefer a little heavy.

A very good walk around, all purposes lens would be a Nikon 18-200mms, 18-300mms, or Tamron 16-300mm.Costco has sold the D7100 paired with the 18-200mm, don't know if they still have that package.

Because you like portraits and primes I would suggest the Tamron 60mm F2 Macro - great reviews ! - and save money. If I were you you and thinking of augmenting my Canon crop frame equipment - I would be thinking of Sony over Nikon - like the new A77II that you do not have to wait for .....
