Loc: Florida's East Coast
Off the coast of downeast Maine, adjacent to Jonesport (and accessible via the Jonesport-Beals bridge) is Great Wass Island. The Nature Conservancy owns part of this and maintains a beautiful network of trails over glacier-scrubbed granite or through subarctic terrain filled with lichen, sphagnum, bearberry, heather, and short firs and pines. A knee-stressing three-hour round-trip takes you to the north shore where you can sit and take in a beautiful cove, often with no one else to disturb you. Peaceful, quiet, no cell signal, an hour to the nearest traffic light. On a summers day like yesterday it reminds us of why we live here. And of course, after a nice hike we can get a huge haddock burger at the local café!
Along the trail
Lichen and sphagnum
Pitcher plants in the sphagnum bog
Sundew (carnivorous plants)
The goal!
A pound of haddock!
Steve,
I am wondering if you would please contact me regarding a possible photo opportunity.

Doc, isn't Great Wass a wonderland of diversity? Thanks for reminding me that it's time for a return trip!

Absolutely! It is hard on my aging knees, though! I also like the bog boardwalk on Campobello.
I will be talking with my son about this - hopefully we can work something out - stay tuned.
Please send contact info - phone/email etc.
Thanks Stan acadiamaine@gmail.com

Great shots Steve, looks like a super place for a nice leisurely hike, and with the added benefit of a great Haddock burger for a reward, can't be beat
