Its been a few weeks since release, do any new owners have opinions on their newest toy?
I have read several reviews that give the D810 rave reviews. Some have even rated it higher than the D4S. I find that hard to believe. I have held the D810 and made a couple of shots, which were good but not enough for me to determine a choice between a D810 and a D4S. I am in the market for a new camera and I cannot make up my mind, however, I'm leaning toward a D4S because of the fast focusing and FPS.

Yes, I have seen some of the non-UHH rave reviews as well.
KR (for what it's worth) seems ready to crown it the new best DSLR.
Review w/o owning the D810 but the D800e
Unless you use this camera in auto mode there is no difference.
Unless you use Video there is no interest to upgrade.
Two lapidary sentences that do not prevent the last one:
If you upgrade from any other model you gain the best DSLR existing at the moment, Sony? being a close second.
This reflects my use of the D800e either full manual or aperture priority. I do not use video. I used it twice when I first had the camera, just to 'see'.
I've never used video either. I am just not interested in that aspect of photography. A respected pro I shoot with told me I was nuts not to pick the D4S over the D810.

And what was his reasoning? I suspect each has it's strengths and weaknesses. Might be a case of the D4S being the better choice for him but maybe not you.

I would agree, simply because you already have a D800. If you didn't have a FX camera, then it's a more complicated decision.
Right now, if I my D800 was gone and I had the money to get either, I would get the D810, unless I decided to commit to being an indoor volleyball photographer.

And that guy was wrong. Both have different and rather distinct advantages. Your use determines what is best, not some opinionated A-hole.
Thanks for the input I am still undecided. The only sport I like to shoot is amateur baseball and today the fences are so high it's difficult to get a clear shooting spot.

I was considering both camera then leaned toward the D800e.
I basically compared the cameras as I compared film. What is more important to me? Speed or details?
Since I was using Agfa Pan 25 or Ilford 50 and in extreme situations Ilford 1000 I decided that speed was still the least of my considerations as details are always in my mind.
Then the image size, 36MB, is nothing to sneeze at*. Finally the dynamic range tipped me over as I want a delicately nuanced balance and that camera (D800e) gives me that.
That is how I approached my choice and why I selected one over the other. Had I needed something else I would have considered the D4. Canon is not in the equation not because it is 'bad' or 'inferior' but because I have quite a few Ks invested in Nikon mount lenses and adopting a new system is way too onerous. I planned to move up to FF for a long time so invested in lenses toward that goal. I mentioned that in another thread.
---
* I already was looking at using the center of the camera (24*24) to avoid most lens distortion.

Just so we're not completely off-topic, we're trying to decide if David will get the D810 so he can give you a review. :-D
Ya but you can buy 2 Nikon D810's for the price of 1 D4s. :)

Price is not a consideration at this level. Use is.
