Making use of some "old" glass...from the days of yore.

I bought an adapter a month or so ago from B&H Photo so I could try and use an old Vivitar Series I 400mm f5.6 on my Canon 40D. Here's a few photos... keep in mind this is in full manual mode for the camera and manually adjusting the aperture ring on the lens. Not to mention the manual focusing and getting used to shooting with a 'super telephoto' lens all over again. The moon shots are from tonight (I need to get a tripod) and the swallow is from this evening. The doves and Cedar Waxwing are from late June on the Oregon Coast, near Rockaway Beach.

Well the old glass did pretty well for itself. I'll come back in a few and see the moon shots, only up to the waxwing right now.

Thanks for taking the time Robert... and I love your "Avatar" by the way.
It took a real struggle to get the bear to wear my Fedora, then a bigger one to get it back. Ended up with a bribe involving canned salmon and a bushel of berries. Or did I just dream that nodding off in front of the TV?

Vivitar made very good lens in the old day. I spent $100 5 years ago in B&H for a Vivitar 100mm f2.8 MF AI-s macro lens following with a Vivitar Ser.1 70-210mm f3.5 Version-1 Mf AI lens for my D200 Nikon. Now they are teaming up with my Df. Yhe 100mm is an excellent macro lens, that reason I don't have to spend much for a Nikon macro AF lens, I shoot macro with MF only. I do have a Nikon 70-210mm AF f4.0 lens, but I like to use both Vivitars for close up flower.

Thanks for sharing those...excellent set. I especially like shot #2 - the rose with water droplets. All beautiful - even Mr. grasshopper.

I do like your #9 (the little swallow), The posting of the bird, even it was a little out of focus in certain area (may be due to wide open aperture and or shake.
After I got my Df, I can afford shooting everything on manual mode with auto ISO. I got the aperture and the shutter I want even in difficult lighting condition.
Thank you for sharing your photo and the feeling of the good old Vivitar lens!
