i have 2 nikon kit lenses........ 18-55mm with 52mm filter size and 55-300mm with 58mm filter size. (dx format for d5200)
would LIKE to buy just one cpf for both lenses. better to get large and go down or vice versa??? or best to get 2 cpf filters. thinking of the HOYA HD2 circular polarizer filters, either size to step or one each. anyone help me make a decision????

Always use a step up as the step down will create vignetting.

Personally I step-up all my lenses to 77mm and use only 77mm filters.

I had the same issue. I went with step up rings on all my lenses to go from 52 to 58 mm, so any filters that I buy only need be 58 mm.

Definately go step up rings though, step down may indeed give you vignetting as Rongnongno mentions.

opps...... my misunderstanding............ get the 58mm cpf and get the STEP UP RING from 52 to 58 for the smaller 18-55mm lens.......
then just mount the 58mm cpf directly to the lens of the long lens nikon............
sorry for the confusion gentleman....... and thank you again.

Get the 52 to 58 step up, right.

If you are looking at other lenses in the near future, look at their diameter and use the larger step-up if necessary.

No, get the 58mm CPL and the Cokin 52-58mm Step-Up Ring (aluminum) or Heliopan 52-58mm Step-Up Ring (brass) as two examples.

Woah!!! $27.00!!!

I use "el cheapo" at $4.00 since this not an optical item. That way I save for the important stuff: high quality glass filters...

I get my step up rings from EBAY - cheap is good.... as long as they are metal.... ;)

If you use snap on lens caps, you will also need to change all your lens caps to 58mm instead of 52....

EBAY is good for lens caps too... cheap and fast.

thanks......... Rongnongno.....
i'll look at all of them, don't really want to get a step with cheap threads to screw up the lens threads or the cpf threads........ don't want to run regular gas in that bmw engine do we???

I use a Nikon D800e with prime lenses so a good decent camera. I never had a single problem with a step-up ring at that price.
