Illustration Mode on Sony a6000

I have enjoyed reading UHH for the last six months or so and I finally have a question I hope the group can help me with. I have had fun using the illustration mode on my Sony a6000 but do not like having to switch between regular mode and illustration mode whenever I want to make the change. I have read on line that somewhere in the camera I can take a existing regular jpeg image and change it to illustration. That would allow me to shoot all jpeg (or jpeg/raw) and then select the images I want to illustrate. I have tried google and have come up empty with how to do this. Any suggestions? Also, years ago I used to use an old Polaroid SX70 and manipulate the emulsion and create fun images. Time Zero film is history and they advertise new film for the camera but I am guessing the photos cannot be manipulated. Any thoughts on this?

I'm not sure but you might be able to change the setting afterwards if you are shooting RAW and using Sony Image Data Converter. Open IDC and look under "creative style". Just a guess. Sure is an interesting concept.

Thanks, From what I have been able to find out illustration mode only works on jpeg images which is what I am trying to use.

Here's how to do it on the Sony HX300. Maybe it works the same (or similar) on the a6000. Click on the preview button to bring up the photo on the LCD screen. Thumb through the images till you get to the one you want to convert to an illustration. While the image is on the screen, push the "Menu" button. A bunch of of settings will pop up along the left side. Scroll through those till you get to one called "Picture Effect". You should see "Ilus" listed as one of the effects. Select it and follow the directions given. It may give you the option of Low, Medium or High for the amount of effect applied. Good Luck...!

James56, I bring up the image that I want to convert and hit the menu button and the screen changes to the actual menu and there are not any settings on the left side. I know there is probably a simple process to get the effect and I will continue to try and figure it out. Thanks!

Send Sony Support an email under contact on their web page and ask the question. They should respond. If they don't let us know so we can get onto Sony for poor service.

Sony Support did respond quickly but did not answer my question fully the first time and upon asking again they did confirm that the a6000 did not have the ability to change an in camera jpeg to illustration. They said they were considering this as an upgrade in the future. Thanks for your help.

There is a Photoshop plug-in by Topaz Labs called Clean. It can turn photos into something similar to what your looking for. Below is a screen shot from their website. Fairly cheap at $29.95. The only drawback is it's not a stand alone program. You must have some sort of photo editing software.

Thanks James, I will take a look. I am currently using PSE 10. Hope that will work.

Can Sony's Illustration effect be simulated with Elements or Lightroom?

If you like the in-camera illustration mode,
why not shoot raw + jpeg ? Then you can
process the raw to get your normal image,
and that is less work than using PP editing
to make your illustration. Plus you'll get to
see the illustration right away. If you want
a different effect later, you will have a raw
file for that as well.

I rather like Sony's in-camera illustration
filter. This is from a 6000, same as yours.
Cropping to about 4/3 format "thickens"
the effect:

Quick run at Elements gave me
something similar to Sony but it
is definitely not the same. If you
wanna try it for yourself, it's at
[Elements 3.0, YMMV]:

I accidentally shot some photos in Illustration mode. Any way to view these pics normally! Ughhhhh! They appeared normal in the playback.
