I have been reading this section for a few months and realize there are many experienced photographers here.
I have been a semi-professional photographer about 30+ years ago in the era of B&W and beginning of color photography.
I had my own B&W lab and some of my photos were winning prizes and were published in various magazines in Eastern Europe.
After immigrating to America, I continued to use the cameras I brought with me (German made 35mm Praktica TTL with several Zies lenses) and a Russian made large format Kiev-88 (copy of Hasselblad) with several Russian made lenses. I was taking color photos, but would use commercial labs for development and printing. About 10 years agomy Praktica broke and I replaced it with a Nikon F4 with a few auto focus lenses.
Both cameras became obsolete and I have been idling ever since.
I am getting ready to resume my photography hobby, but since the technology revolution (digital vs film), I found myself wondering what kind of camera to purchase.
I would love the experts on this site help me choose the right equipment to dive into new to me world of digital photography.
I would like to narrow down my choices:
I prefer a Nikon brand.
My main fields are head shots, architecture and group photography.
I like to snap pictures of people from a distance without them knowing being photographed.
I am looking at Nikon 610 and 810.
Please advise on camera and lenses. Would I be able to use my Nikkor lenses I have for Nikon F4?

Your best bet is to go to a reputable camera store and discuss your needs . They will make recommendations ,allow you to handle the cameras and shoot a few shots . You will have the feel of the camera and maybe at that time narrow down your desired camera . One can also check out the Internet for camera s as well as lenses . Many good systems out there but as you mentioned you are looking at Nikons you will definitely be happy with one . I shoot both Nikon and Canon and use either for any occasion . Good luck !

Welcome to the Hog, Sam. You can't go wrong with either-610 or 810- both are great choices. Personally I would choose the 610 as I believe anything over 24mp is overkill. As for glass, all of your F-mount lenses will work on either camera but w/o auto focus depending on their vintage. As for new lense choices check out my signature line for my suggestions, each have a purpose for me. Good luck and again welcome to the Hog. ;)

Welcome to the Hog Sam, yes your old lenses will work on
a 610 or 810 DSLR, but it will be manual focus.

Welcome to UHH Sam, glad you finally joined us. I agree with previous answers, yes your Nikkor lens will work but manual focus. I have shot Nikon since the middle 70's and still do. I now shoot the Nikon D7100, budget would not allow FF. From what I am reading about the D810 it seems like a fine camera. Let us know what you decided on. Have fun and enjoy the forum.
