Humans, we're a funny bunch. We're quick to pit people against each other in tribes: liberal vs. conservative, poor vs. rich, old vs. young. But we often seem to overlook the fact that despite these seemingly obvious differences, we all still have the fundamental sameness.

That's what fascinated photographer Mark Laita, who decided to stand people of different backgrounds, occupations, and appearances next to each other to — in his words — "let the viewer think for themselves about how the two individuals in the photographs relate and what that means."
