Interesting --- but I'd say it's strongly influenced by the demographic that routinely reads (or subscribes to) Conde Nast Traveler, which is probably not the "average Joe". Most of those listed also have a cost of living level that is well above the national average.

I read Conde Nast Traveler twice a year -- in my dentist's office.

Sorry, but when Aspen came up I tuned out. The poor schmucks who work in the restaurants and such can't afford to live anywhere near there. Same with Vail and most of the other chi-chi places on this list. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... How about some real, affordable small cities which us proles might possibly afford?? Huh, Conde-Nasty??

I guess the title says it all - "best" does not mean a normal human being can afford to live there! All of these cities have a cost of living far above the national average. Aspen and Vail have had to create "towns" for their workers to live in, and they then bus them in. Even the hospital in Aspen, as I recall, built a condo nearby so that nurses and other hospital staff could actually live in the town they served. I suppose you could look at the list and then look for small cities near these with similar characteristics but without the star attractions - for example, Colorado has a number of nice small cities that don't have famous ski slopes that attract the A-list crowd, and so thus are less expensive. Durango comes to mind - affordable, serviced by an airport, beautiful, has a small college so things happen year-round, tons of surrounding activities (including skiing). Grand Junction is also worth a look, but it has a little more crime.
