The soldier beetle is sometimes called 'Pennsylvania Leatherwing'. Other names for yarrow include nosebleed plant, old man's pepper, devil's nettle, milfoil, soldier's woundwort, etc. It used to be used to staunch bleeding. I find all the names for plants and insects funny and interesting.

Nice photo - and I too love the history of plants. As a physician I routinely use many medicines that have been around for thousands of years - colchicine, digitalis, quinine-based medications, etc. Yes - the Latin name achillea is from the story of Achilles using it one the wounds of his soldiers. When I lived in Colorado I catalogued all the native plants on my 5 acres of high prairie that had a history of being used medicinally (used a Peterson Field Guide to medicinal plants). I had photos and information on about 55 plants before we moved.
Thank you, rlaugh, Steve, and Bizzy! :-)
