This town is supposed to be "preserved" from the 1860's, but is really just a tourist trap with lot's of tacky shops. Yet I have been here several times while staying in the Tahoe area always hoping to catch an image that is a bit different. These were taken today.

Hi carlsbadmike, I've been going to Virginia City since I was a teen as my Dad raced there in the Virginia City Grand Prix for many years. There truly is a lot of legitimate history to be enjoyed. The next time you go check out the The Comstock Lode (very interesting), the cemetery is also filled with history and a lot of very unique headstones. I really like your version of the church, it is really a beauty.!
RE,
I totally agree with you on this and wanted to visit the cemetery but had to hang around the Main Street most of the time due to wife and teen kids looking at jewelry in stores...next time for sure.

Check out the comstock too, super interesting. If you are interested, here is a link to a few photo's I posted on it last year. Oh and there is a wonderful wagon/fire engine museum as well.

Since you stay in Tahoe, especially South Lake Tahoe west of the state line, then you should be very familiar with a tourist trap with lots of expensive shops. We were there just the other day with out-of-town company. We offered a trip to Virginia City or up to Emerald Bay then back to the So. Tahoe tourist trap area. They opted for Tahoe. They didn't care much for the ride up Hwy 89 to Emerald Bay, especially the neurotic daughter.
Don't know if you have ever been to Bodie, CA. That's an old mining town that has been preserved in a state of decay.
I'm not a big fan of VC but the trip there on Hwy 341 (the Occidental Grade) or 342 is a good ride on a motorcycle. Then back down on the Geiger Grade is nice also.

I like your takes and especially the takes. I live close by and am often trapped.
Belated thanks for your recommendation on Bodie. It is on the top of our list next time we hit US 395 on the trip to Tahoe this summer...Mike
