Is there any issue that we come across in our daily discourse that we could address with a truly unbiased open mind?

Hard to imagine any issue that doesn't affect one's biases. The more diverse a nation becomes, the less unanimity occurs.

Everything that makes you who you are contributes to how you think, how you perceive, and how you react.

The trick then is to still your mind, listen, think, ask questions, then and only then, make decisions that are important to you and those around you.

I truly believe that there are many altruistic areas in our daily discourse that embellish the need for an open mind if indeed we find the need to resolve those necessary to maintain a truly democratic way of life.

I can't believe how everybody has an opinion on everything. I don't. There are lots of circumstances that I haven't thought completely out. Do you make blanket opinions on every matter? There are big and small ideas I haven't made a decision on, and guess what, the world isn't going to fall apart because of it. Does social media throw us into this? Does your desire to get along with others trump any dissenting feelings you may have?

Something to think about...

I think that everyone would agree that children should be loved, cherished and given the best start on life that we can give them......(There might be those who disagree with that statement, but they are probably not stupid enough to express it openly)

Plato was reported to say to Aristotle "observe". Aristotle replied "observe what?" Plato said "exactly". Not the greatest anacdote, but it does show that the way we see things is largely influenced by our past experiences.

I would agree that everyone in todays modern society, would think like that. But it wasn't so many generations ago, when children were thought of as an asset purely to work in order to help raise the famiy income. This is still the case in some global communities.

But, are we speaking about history? Or today, and with people likely to read and join this forum?...(Read the OP)

I think Plato probably said to Aristotle, "Get me a cup of coffee" (since he interned at the academy for about 18 years....LOL)

how can you pretend to know why people had children and didn't cherish them "so many generations ago" ?

It's a matter of recorded history that boys were prized over girls, as they were more able to help run the farm. This still takes place in China. Before the 1700s there was no word for childhood.

I'll accept boys being prized as the heir generations ago, but I know, regardless of recorded history, that everyone helps on a farm. As for the orient I've seen with my own eyes that women do most of the rice paddy work, and yes everyone lends a hand or potentially the family could starve. None of that means the children are not cherished

This amazing. Even in a thread about getting along, you folks still have to nit-pick and disagree about everything.

I would guess that half of you in here have never uttered the words, "Yeah, that could be right."
