How to catch a lobster.

Hundreds of thousands of lobster buoys bob in the ocean off the coast of New England and New Brunswick, Canada. Each buoy marks a lobster trap, and each trap requires bait. The source of that bait is not something most of us ever think about.
The bait used to catch lobster is fish. And one purveyor of such fish is Look and Son's Lobster of Jonesport, Maine. A large boat collects the fish from smaller boats offshore and delivers 400,000 pounds at a time to the Look operations. It is off-loaded to trucks using a pumping system developed by the Looks. When the boat comes in the trucks will be lining up for 12 to 15 hours. Sometimes they only have commitments for 250,000 pounds or so, so they salt the remaining fish to preserve it for use in the near future.

Too bad UHH does not have smell-o-vision!
Truck getting filled up.
Flowing fish.
Yum!
Salting the fish.
You've made me very nostalgic this morning. I lived in South County,RI near Pt Judith in the early eighties. We used to walk down to the coast to watch the fishing boats come in with their catch. Nearly every house in the neighborhood had a stack of lobster traps in the front yard. It was a great place to live.
Headed to Camden this morning to pick up our boat for a week of sailing along the coast of Maine. I'll be sure to eat a few of those lobsters to keep the fish bait business going!
When I was doing my 'one man operation' out of Buzzards Bay, Ma (4 traps)) my biggest problem was always coming up with something for bait. In the spring there's a run of herring and I could freeze almost enough to last the season. Would have been a lot easier to help this boat unload. But easier isn't necessarily more fun.
Interesting series, well done!
Nice shots of the commercial end of things that we rarely see.

Yes - and also support those hard-working clam diggers. And the butter-churners!
