Tethering Nikon D5100 to my tablet

Want to tether my D5100 to my tablet for remote control though my tablet. Can't find a cable or adapters to make it so. Tablet has a mini HDMI port, a micro USB port, and a micro SD card slot. Wondering if an eye-fi card might do the job without physically tethering them. I'm in a SERIOUS learning curve here so any advice is greatly welcome!

The easiest and most capable and flexible is the CamRanger. It isn't cheap at $300.00 but after you Google it you will have to have one. JFO

Your camera has a micro-USB port for remote use, so you could get a micro-USB to micro-USB extension (I got a 10' one) to hook your camera to your tablet. The other cord came with your camera, it's the same one you use to download photos from your camera to your tablet. You might check http://www.controlmynikon.com for a program and compatibility, costs about $30.

The camera has a micro hdmi port - not usb. Got a cable with the camera that I adapted to the tablet. Now gotta find an app that with interface the two.

If your D5100 is the same as my D7000 you need this:

Micro USB OTG (On the Go) to USB Adapter - M/F

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812400329

So the cable you use to download photos from your camera to computer - the one that plugs into a standard usb port on the computer is plugged into this usb otg and that gets plugged into the tablet. You just need to make sure that the usb otg has the right plug to fit into your usb port on the tablet. My tablet has a micro usb port.

I'm not convinced you can just use an extension or other cable to make this happen. Kind of like you can't plug an ethernet cable into two computers and have them communicate. They have to go through a router or switch. Of course there is a cross cable where the pins are switched in the ethernet cable and I wonder if that is perhaps what might be happening in the usb otg.

Remember even if you can connect the camera and the tablet, the tablet has to control the camera so you need a specific connection to make that happen. That I think is where this usb otg comes into play.

A year ago no one at stores knew what this was or had it in stock. Found it at newegg. Now TigerDirect has it in its stores.

It works well for me with Helicon Remote, DSLR Dashboard, etc. and the D7000.

Check out Case Remote on indiegogo.com. Wireless tethering is the way to go and this is significantly cheaper than the original crowd funding solution, Cam Ranger.

Is there a way to make tethering wireless to increase working distance between camera and tablet/phone/laptop? Case Remote seems like a new crowd-funded project not yet really available?

I don't know if Jerry ever finished his.

The DSLR dashboard site is where you want to be (if you have a Canon you can use DSLR controller I believe).

Yes, wireless should allow a greater distance. If you must have wireless tethering now, Cam Ranger is the solution, but it is pricey. Case Remote has made its funding requirement but is not yet shipping. Since it is about a third of the cost of Cam Ranger, I'll wait.

Thanks- I should have looked these up first! Still seems like not a real easy process and can be costly. Would these steps or others also work for a laptop system, besides android devices?

I think you can make it happen for less than $50 if you can find the TP at the right price. The procedure is really easy and takes no time at all.

My problem was that the on/off switch looks like the selector switch and I turned the unit on but really didn't. Really tough to do a firmware upgrade an a device that's not turned on

That ate up about 90% of the time it took to do it.

In the Jerry thread, I think there is a lot of info as to where to get the info to make it happen.

If you can follow directions and watch videos, it is easy. That's really where you spend your time in the process.

I don't know on the laptop question. I looked at:

http://dslrdashboard.info/dslrdashboardserver-ddserver/

but that was not clear so I'd have to look at it some more. The only benefit of using a laptop verses a tablet would be the higher storage capacity of the laptop for downloaded photos.

depending on what you are using for software, the download USB cable for you camera will work for tethering. Also, Nikon's wifi adapter will work for teathering to your tablet using adhoc wifi. IT WILL NOT connect through a network and router so you have to either disconnect the tablet from your "house wifi" or be out and away. The Wi-Fi adapter is about $40-$60 and plugs into the adapter port on the camera... The software is free though apple or android.
Note: it works ok and will work with tablet or phone. The better solutions are more expensive.

Thank You, Phil! I checked my equipment again: I have the micro-hdmi to standard USB, and then a 10' USB extension so the camera can be further from the computer. Sorry I was incorrect earlier. :?
