I was wondering if I could get your opinion. I'm looking into buying a Canon, 70-200mm f2.8 lens. But which one. Their is the new model at over $ 2000 and the old model at $1200. I have rented both, liked both but trying to figure out which one. Both are awesome and I'm leaning towards the older model. Any opinions?
I tried both and didn't see any difference. The first generation lens has been discontinued and not likely to be found unless you get a used one. I was fortunate and my dealer had one traded in and I got a deal on it. I'm happy with it. I've yet to try it with a doubler. Maybe today.

I just picked up the new model (v II) and love it but don't think the differences with the discontinued model are that great. I have a friend who has that model and his shots look as good as mine when shooting the same subject. Here's a review that explains some of the differences.

I think the difference is the the newer one is an L lens. My brother has the old one, and he recently bought a converter and loves the results. I have the new one. It is great but very heavy. You might be very happy with the old one and the converter (about $300), and it is lighter than the new one, even with it.
The new one has IS (image stablization) which helps immensely when shooting hand-holding. I would save my money and buy the new one - it is heavy, but you will not be disappointed!

Gotta check with my brother again! If they both have IS and are L lenses, then I'm not understanding the difference between $1200 for his and $2300 for mine, except maybe they added lead weights.

I found out the difference! The new one is F2.8 and the older one is F4.0.
if you rented both and liked both..and they gave you the same quality shots, definitely buy the one with the best price.
i have a 70-200mm2.8L IS model and love it. i have had it for quite some time and it's my favorite lens. i use it for portature.
i never use the IS..so i should have rented the non-IS model and tried it before i bought. when i bought mine, it was about $2800...but that is one lens that you will have to pry my cold, dead fingers off to get it from me!!
i only really use 2 lenses..this lens and a 24-70mm2.8 L lenses. i keep one on my 5d and the other on my 7d. haven't made a lens change on either camera for quite some time.
buy it, you will love it!!
edit..just saw your post. eek..i would always buy a 2.8 if you can afford it. google phil steele...........he uses the 4.0 and he loves it. he is a pro photographer in LA and offers some inexpensive training material also.

Nat, you really need to school yourself on the Canon lens family. The two lenses that were referred to in the original question are the 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM model. The original one was introduced in 2001 and the new "II" model came out in 2010 and had some subtle enhancements to better perform with the newer and faster DSLRs.

Based on your avatar you either shoot a Canon L lens and should be familiar with their models or a Sony where other white colored lenses are offered.

Both are L lenses 2.8 USM with IS.
The only difference is the new one has more lenses in it and the old one is discontinued and is not likely to be found new.
I was able to get the older one used and saved a bit of money.
